 DIVERGENT, BY VERONICA ROTH

Book review

Divergent is a science-fiction novel written by Veronica Roth in 2011. The history is based on a dystopia in which people are grouped within their personal values. These groups are called factions, and there are five of them: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful) Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent) and Dauntless (the brave). But there are people that don't fit in any of the above. For those, there is a faction called Divergent. But this one is out of the system, and therefore, its members are hunted and killed.

The main character of the story is a girl called Beatrice Prior (Tris). All her family and friends are abnegates, but when she takes the test that will decide which faction she belongs in, she discovers something quite unpleasant. She is a divergent, but she cannot tell anyone or otherwise, she and all her beloved will be in terrible danger. In this book, Tris will have to make life-or-death decisions and confront several obstacles to remain alive, always with some help from her friends.

Meanwhile, Beatrice will fall in love, make new friendships, learn to fight… But something’s unright. Mysterious things are happening, odd conversations are overheard and there is something going on that they can’t seem to understand. Now more than ever, Tris will have to be extremely careful so that nobody discovers what she truly is.

In my opinion, this book is a must-read for girls and boys of over 12 years old. When I first started reading it, I couldn’t put it down! The plot is amazing, and the twists, unexpected. The book is very well-written and structured, and it’s very easy to follow. In conclusion, Veronica Roth made an incredible job with this novel, and I highly recommend it.
